Săraca Monastery
Șemlacu Mic, Romania

The “SĂRACA” Monastery (LMI code TM-II-m-A-06294), one of the oldest monastic settlements in Banat, is documented at the end of the 13th century, under the name “Monastery of Semlac of the Plain“. The church is the only building remaining from the former monastery complex and represents a valuable monument of art which, in its current form, probably dates from the 16th century. It consists of a narthex, a nave with two rectangular apses and a circular altar and is covered with vaults. The porch is of more recent date, and in the narthex there are several fragments of a painting dating from the 16th century. The painting was executed in 1730 by a group of painters from the Romanian countryside. In the first half of the 18th century, a school operated here whose teachers were Romanian monks.
About the Project
In order to create the intervention project for the consolidation and restoration of the church, it is necessary to know the existing situation. In order to obtain accurate information, a 3D scan of the church was necessary, in order to obtain a point cloud that will form the basis of the intervention project carried out by the beneficiaries.
About the Process
The field data collection stage involved 3D scanning of the entire church, namely the exterior, interior and roof structure.
The processing of the field data is a stage that was divided into two procedures to obtain the desired result. The first stage represents an initial processing that results in a raw point cloud in which elements of no interest are also present (in this case scaffolding for construction, vegetation, people, etc.). The second stage represents the cleaning of the raw point cloud of all elements that may confuse or make it difficult for the beneficiary to visualize and analyze the existing situation.
The cleaned and simplified point cloud was delivered to the beneficiary at a resolution of 20 million points. This will form the basis for creating the intervention project for the consolidation and restoration of the church.
Quantifiable Data
• Field data collection (photos and laser stations): 10 hours
• Number of laser stations: 64
• Processing data resulting from scanning (raw point-cloud): 4 hours
• Post-processing - raw point-cloud cleaning: 12 hours
• Raw point-cloud: 362 million points
• Cleaned point-cloud: 20 million points
