Eugeniu de Savoya Ruin no. 10, Cetate Neighbourhood, Timisoara

Stage 1: Digital scan of the ruin

About the Project

As a result of the purchase of the land and the building located on Eugeniu de Savoya street no. 10 from Timișoara, by a private investor, the issue of conserving, restoring or removing the ruins of an old building (over 200 years old) that were on the site was raised. Given the opportunity to carry out a complex project of conservation and consolidation of the existing ruin, the team of experts, architectural and structural designers requested the full scanning of the objective and partial scanning of the neighboring buildings, at a lower level of detail. The scan allowed to obtain precise data regarding the state of degradation of the ruin, its deformations, but also the neighboring calcanes, data related to its geometry, level elevations, etc.

About the Process

Considering the need to obtain the most accurate data, a mix between photogrammetry and laser scanning was chosen, where additional measures were taken to control the level of precision, by geo-referencing some control points, by using a total topometric station.
The steps to obtain the results involved: making a topometric survey, photogrammetric and laser scanning, geo-referencing the control points, remodeling the scanned object in the ArchiCAD design program (for use in the design process), generating orthoprojects in all areas of interest, generating of horizontal and vertical sections in .dwg vector format, drawing up a memorandum of interpretation of the data resulting from the scan.

Stage 2: Digital scan of the interior of the blind wall

About the Project

The evolution of the conservation and consolidation project of the ruin on Eugeniu de Savoya street no. 10, put the problem of the degradation occurring in the neighboring building blind wall. In this sense, a 3D digital scan of the site was carried out, which is the basis of a series of studies on the degradations present in the blind wall area.

Following the resulting 3D model, a series of architectural plans were made on which observations were noted of the defects, degradations, finishes and utilities that were present and visible.

About the Process

Considering the need to obtain the most accurate geometry data, laser scanning was chosen. The interior spaces were scanned individually and centralized into a complete 3D model.

After data collection from the field, the textured 3D model was processed, from which the orthoprojections with the areas of interest were later extracted: the inner blind wall adjacent to the ruin and of the structural walls, perpendicular to it.

The obtained data were processed in the ArchiCAD architectural software, in this stage we marked the following: the compartmentalization of the space, the defective areas, showing degradations, finishes and utilities, visible from the scan.
