About the Project
Politehnica University of Timișoara, through the project Spotlight Heritage / Heritage under the spotlight, has developed a digital cultural initiative, carried out in partnership with the National Museum of Banat, part of the Cultural Program Timișoara 2023 European Capital of Culture. Through the project, the historical episodes of Timișoara are (re)told through digital technologies. The protagonists of the stories are objects of cultural and historical heritage, of technological developments, of communities and neighborhoods, of yesterday's and today's inhabitants. In this case, the project coordinators wanted to scan the Roman Catholic Church of Elizabeth, interior and exterior, for virtual tours. Users will be able to have an immersive experience through the Oculus 2 VR Headset, through which they will be able to explore the objective.
About the Process
Considering the objectives of the project, the level of detail of the scanned 3D model had to be as faithful as possible to reality. In this regard, it was decided to scan the objective through a mixed scanning process - photogrammetry (aerial and ground level) and laser scanning. Following the collection of data from the field, it was processed at the level of point-cloud, mesh and textured mesh, at maximum levels of detail. Later, by simplifying the mesh and retexturing it, a 3D model optimized for viewing in VR in the Unity graphics engine was obtained.
