The historical tower of the
former church "Saint Nicholas"
Lugoj, Romania

About the Project
The tower of the former church "Saint Nicholas" is located in Victory Square in Lugoj, Timiș County. This building is classified as a Class A Historical Monument and is indexed in the List of Historical Monuments under the identification code TM-II-m-A-06256.
The historical tower is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Lugoj, beeing built, together with the former church, in 1726. The body of the former church was demolished in 1879, without being rebuilt.
Our role in this project was to create a 3D model, resulted from laser and photogrammetric scanning, together with facades and sections plans. These serve in the analysis of the building by the competent specialties in order to execute emergency repairs.
About the Process
In order to obtain a 3D model that is true to reality, both in terms of geometry and texture, a mixed workflow was used. This involved combining laser scanning, performed with the Trimble X7 terrestrial laser scanner, with photogrammetric scanning, performed by capturing photos from the ground with a camera and from the air with a drone.
After the stage of field data collection, the processing started using dedicated softwares. The result was a 3D model with a geometry and texture that was true to reality. In this way, obtaining the facades and sections plans was done with minimal effort.
Quantifiable Data
• Field data collection (photos and laser stations): 6 hours
• Number of ground photos: 1548 / Number of drone photos: 360 / Number of laser stations: 17

• Post-processing II - generation of technical drawings resulting from the scanned 3D model (orthophotoprojections, vector profiles, architectural drawings, etc.): 4 hours
• Number of orthoprojections: 7
