The Plague Monument
Holy Trinity Monument,
Union Square Timisoara

About the Project

Another project within Spotlight Heritage was scanning the Plague Monument or the Holy Trinity Monument in the center of Timișoara, located in Piața Unirii. The obkect will also be used for virtual tours and represented a very good opportunity to exemplify the pure photogrammetric scanning process. Laser scanning was not necessary because the object meets the ideal requirements for photogrammetric scanning: compact shape, opaque surfaces with many details and the weather in the field was very favorable - cloudy sky with constant light intensity.

About the Process

The scan was done in an afternoon, by a team of 2 people: one person took the photos from the ground and one person took the aerial photos from a drone copter (Parrot Anafi). The resulting data was centralized in the Reality Capture software where the textured 3D model was generated. It has been cleaned and optimized before export for use in creating virtual tours by the Spotlight Heritage of Timisoara team. In addition, I made a short presentation film.

Quantifiable Data

Number of ground photos: 338 / Number of drone photos: 550
Processing of the data resulting from the scan (point-cloud, mesh, texture): 8 hours
Post-processing I (in this case, cleaning the 3D model for use in virtual tours): 2 hours
Post-processing II (production of presentation film): 2 hours
External 3D Mesh - 108 Mil. polygons
External 3D Mesh optimized for virtual tours - 2 Mil. polygons
